On Poetry
Sri Aurobindo's principal work of literary criticism. In this work, Sri Aurobindo outlines the history of English poetry and explores the possibility of a spiritual poetry in the future. It was first published in a series of essays between 1917 and 1920; parts were later revised for publication as a book.
THEME/S
THE FUTURE POETRY was first published as a series of essays in the Arya from 1917 to 1920. Sri Aurobindo thought of revising it before giving it the form of a book. He wished to add even a few chapters, especially dealing with the Metaphysicals and the Modern Poets. He was not able to do more than write a few paragraphs supplementary to matter already treated. Although these have been incorporated in their proper places the book first brought out in 1953 remains for practical purposes a reprint of the original essays.
LETTERS ON POETRY, LITERATURE AND ART has been added here as a separate part of the volume for the purposes of the Centenary Edition. These letters, originally written to disciples, were first published in book-form in 1949 as LETTERS OF SRI AUROBINDO, Third Series, by the Sri Aurobindo Circle, Bombay. The present edition has been revised and considerably enlarged by the inclusion of a large number of additional letters.
