HYMN 112

Rishi : KUTSA Deity: ASHVINS

  1. To know them first I worship Heaven and Earth, then Agni, kindled and bright-shining, for their coming for worship. Come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids wherewith ye please the sacrifice63
  1. Happily holding, unattached, they stand by your car, for your grace, as with the wise with the Word. Come hither unto us, O Ashwins, with those aids wherewith ye protect our thoughts64
  1. O leaders, by the might infused from celestial nectar, ye are in supreme dominion over all the people, Come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids wherewith ye filled the barren Cow.

  2. With those aids by which the Wanderer (Vayu) through the might of his son (Agni) is the measurer of the Two (Heaven and Earth), becomes swiftest of the swift and by which the knower of the Three (Worlds)65

  1. With those aids by which ye rescued Rebha, raised him caught in the Waters and also Vandana to behold the light, by which ye saved Kanva avid for light come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

Rebha: known for his praise-songs.

  1. With those aids by which ye rescued struggling Antaka, saved Bhujyu, effortlessly, the aids by which ye relieved Karkandhu and Vayya, - come hither untó us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

Antaka: who destroys the foes.

  1. With those aids by which ye enriched Shuchanti and gave him a happy home, gave Atri a well-protected luminous body matured by tapas, guarded Prishnigu and Purukutsa, - come hither unto us, O. Ashvins, with those aids.

Shuchanti: who is luminous.

Prishnigu: with cows of variegated hues.

  1. Showerers, with what powers ye gave aid to Parava raj, gave sight to the blind, walk to Shrona, freed the tremulous from seizure, - come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

  2. The aids by which ye brought the most sweet stream to flow, by which ye ageless ones, gratified Vasishtha, protected Kutsa, Shrutarya and Narya, - come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

  3. With those aids by which ye helped opulent Vishpala, unable to move, in battle rich with thousand bounties, by which ye protected eager66

Vishpala: protector of peoples.

Ashva: Rishi full of Prana.

  1. With those aids, bounteous givers, by which the reservoir shed its sweet for trading Dirghasravas, son of Ushija, by which ye protected singer Kakshiyan, come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

Dirghasravas: who hears from far.

  1. With those aids by which ye made the delectable river swell full with water, and urged to victory the car without horse, by which Trishoka drove up his cows, come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

Trishoka: triply luminous.

  1. With those aids by which ye encompass the Sun when far off, by which ye defended Mandhata in his functions as lord of lands and protected sage Bharadwaja so well, - come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

Mandhata: intellectual.

Bharadwaja: full of prosperity.

  1. With those aids by which ye defended the mighty Atithigwa, Kashojuva, Divodasa, when Shambara was slain, by which ye protected Trasadasyu when the forts were torn down, - come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

Atithigwa: resorted to by guests.

Kashojuva: to whom the waters flow.

Divodasa: seryer of the Divine.

  1. With those aids by which ye protected Vamra, the great drinker, and Upastuta, and Kali when he gained a wife, and Vyashva, and Prithi, - come hither unto us, ( Ashvins, with those aids.

Upastuta: praised by those nearby.

Kali: urging others to sacrifice.

Vyashva: who had lost his horse.

Prithi: large one.

  1. With those aids, O leaders, by which ye favoured of old, with the way (out) Shayu, Atri, Manu, by which ye shot arrows (upon the foes) of Syumarshini, - come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

Shayu: who sleeps on the divine ground.

Syumarshini: attached with Rays of Knowledge.

  1. With those aids by which Patharvan, with strength of form, shone in battle like Agni kindled with fuel, by which ye defended Sharyata in the great battle, - come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

  2. O Angirasas, with those aids by which ye delight (the singers) with mere mind, thought by which ye went onward to the cave to liberate the Cows and Waters, by which ye defended the hero Manu with force of impulsion, - come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

  3. With those aids by which ye brought a wife to Vimada, by which ye freely gave away the ruddy kine, by which ye brought the God-worthy treasure to Sudasa, - come hither unto us, O Ashyins, with those aids.

  4. With those aids by which ye enhappy the giver, by which ye have protected Bhujyu and Adhrigu, by which ye brought protective, well-borne wealth to Ritastubh, come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

Ritastubh: who hymns the Truth.

  1. With those aids by which ye served Krishanu when the shafts were shot, by which ye helped the youth’s horse in speed, by which ye bring delicious honey to the bees, - come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

Krishanu: Agni who guards the Soma.

  1. With those aids by which ye help the hero fighting for kine in strenuous battle, by which ye help him in acquiring land and sons, by which ye guard his chariots and horses, - come hither unto us, O Ashvins, with those aids.

Land: earth etc. which are the foundation of the play of Consciousness.

  1. Doers of hundred deeds, with those aids by which ye protected Kutsa, son of Arjuna, as well as Turviti, Dabhiti, Dayasanti and Purushanti, - come hither unto us, O Ashwins, with those aids.

Arjuna: Indra of the pure Mind.

Turviti: who slays the foes.

Dabhiti: subduer of foes.

Purushanti: giver of plenty.

  1. O Ashvins, make our speech effective, our thought (effective); subduers, showerers, I invoke ye for protection in pursuits without wager. Be for our increase in the gain of prosperity.

  2. O Ashvins, guard us ever by day and by night, with undiminished blessings; and may Mitra, Varuna, Aditi, Ocean, Earth and Heaven grant it.
