Born in 1928, Chitra Sen is the daughter of Nolini Kanta Sen and Ila Sen and younger sister of Dr. Satyabrata Sen who was Sri Aurobindo’s physician. After visiting the Ashram a few times as a young girl, Chitra Sen came to stay here in the Ashram of Pondicherry in 1943, the same year the Mother made her an Ashramite. During her stay here in those days, she gave two hours of service to the Ashram and was also studying under the guidance of various members of the Ashram here.
In 1945 the Mother sent her to work in the Ashram Press. Here, she with a few others of her age-group, learnt hand-composing and afterwards was one of those who learnt mono-typing. This work continued till 1966. She was at the same time teaching Biology in the Ashram School - both at the Higher Secondary and College level. Subsequently, she was asked to take charge of the whole section of Biology here.
In 1946, the Mother sent her to help to look after the Physical Education for senior women, and in 1948, made her the 'captain' in-charge of the three ladies' groups along with members selected by the Mother to help in the various physical education activities here. In 1988, she was given the charge of the Tresor Nursing Home by the Ashram Trustees. Later she was also chosen as one of the members of the Advisory Board to help in the Ashram's work. The last assignment given to her was to take care of the Batik Department - a significant part of the hand-done art works of the Ashram.
