Bodhisattva : In the Mahayana School, Buddhists or saints, who have qualified themselves to attain Nirvana in this life but voluntarily forego that state in order to help their fellowmen to attain it, are called Bodhisattvas. They receive veneration, respect, & worship like that given to Gautama Buddha himself. “Love is the turning of the Self from its false self in the mind or body to its true Self in another…. So is it finally with the lover of the whole world, of whom the mighty type is Buddha, the one unapproachable ideal of Divine Love in man, he who turned from perfect divine bliss as he had turned from perfect human bliss that not he alone but all natures might be saved. To see your Self in all creatures & all creatures in your Self – that is the unshakable foundation of all religion, love, patriotism, philanthropy, humanity, of everything which rises above .selfishness & gross utility.” [SABCL Vol.12:484]

... in the past. Sri Aurobindo thinks not only of individual superman but also of a race of supermen. The collectivity is conceived to evolve gradually to a higher stage of life and being. When the Bodhisattva resolves not to get into Nirvana (final fulfilment) until all others are made ready for the same, the stress is purely on individual liberation, one by one. The idea of a society of the liberated ...

... supra-human, not because there is a lack or deficiency in the human feeling, but because there is a heightening and a transcendence in the consciousness and being. To man, to human valuation, the Bodhisattva may appear to be greater than the Buddha; even so to the sick a physician or a nurse may seem to be a diviner angel than any saint or sage or perhaps God himself – but that is an inferior view-point ...

... that Buddha did exist whereas there is no proof of his previous births, of the existence of other Bodhisattvas. Only after Gautama Buddha appealed did we come to know that he was the thirty-second Bodhisattva, while Dipankar was the first. ... one finds the Bodhisattvas (who stand for saints as in all other religions), all the previous Buddhas who are also like some sort of demigods or gods. ... There is a controversy here. Of course, Alexandra belonged to the Buddhism of the South, which is very rigid and absolutely rejects all the fancies of the Buddhism of the North with its innumerable bodhisattvas and all the stories (they've got so many stories! pulp novels). And she rejected all that, saying it wasn't part of Buddha's authentic teaching. Buddha said that the world, this terrestrial world ...

Their former asceticism enables them to reach without harm ...
