Located north of Rājagriha, the original name of Pātaliputra, capital of Magadha, it was founded by the Gupta emperor Narasimhagupta Bālāditya who had converted to Mahayana Buddhism; he installed there an 80ft high copper Buddha in an ornamental temple.
