Ormuz : Hormuz, island off South Iran, in the Strait of Hormuz between the Persian Gulf & the Gulf of Oman. The town of Hormuz on the mainland had an abundance of palm, indigo, grain & spices, & by c.1200 it monopolized trade with India & China. It relocated to the island due to the invasion of Jenghiz Khan. There too it gradually superseded Qeys as the most important Persian emporium, & market for Indian goods.
