White Roses (Part I : 1963 - 1973) is an enlarged edition, which includes more of The Mother’s correspondence with Huta & facsimiles of Her handwritten notes.

White Roses – messages of value to all seekers, collected from the Mother’s many letters to Huta. (Mother once told her ‘I have never written so many letters to anyone as I have to you’ and Huta once told me that in all she had received over 8000 letters and cards from the Mother.) The Mother wished White Roses to be translated into many languages and made available all over the world.
THEME/S
This book consists of letters which the Mother wrote to me during the period 1955 to 1973, which reveal her vast knowledge of spirituality and occultism. They deal with numerous aspects of Sri Aurobindo’s integral Yoga as well as presenting her profound observation and understanding of the world and its true future.
Readers will gain a vivid sense of the deep truths and realities behind earthly existence and our mundane day-to-day life. Those who aspire to achieve self-mastery will obtain practical guidance even in matters such as dreams, food, sleep, health, reading, prayer and meditation.
Here I may express my feeling and experience that if one opens this book White Roses after concentrating briefly on the Mother, without fail one gets a proper answer.
This is Part II, covering the period from 1963-1973.
These letters originally appeared in three separate booklets, covering the periods 1955-1963, 1964-1965, 1966-1968. Then they were all put together, along with some new letters received during the period 1969-1973. The division into parts was retained however, because to each of them the Mother gave a short introductory note:

Later, in 1981, all the letters appeared in the Mother’s own handwriting.
The most important feature of this new revised and enlarged edition of White Roses is the inclusion of many more of the Mother’s letters to me that are of general interest. Facsimiles of the Mother’s handwriting have been included, along with the pictures corresponding to the letters. As some of these facsimiles are not easy to decipher in several places, transcriptions of them have been printed below. Others which are in the most part difficult to read have been given in printed version only.
Also included are some personal letters which cannot be avoided since without them the continuity of the series is broken. At the same time they touch on general points no less than on personal ones. They express some of my deficiencies, but I have not hesitated to place them before the public. Human nature is all of one piece, and what was written to me by the Divine Mother may apply to others as well.
When in due course my other book, The Story of a Soul, is published these letters and many more will be better understood because their full context will be seen.
White Roses also includes some relevant quotations from Sri Aurobindo’s and the Mother’s works, sent to me by her. There is also a reproduction of one of the Mother’s sketches, Ascent to the Truth, along with her explanation of it. A photograph of the Mother which she gave to me with her signature is also reproduced.
The Mother expressed to me her wish that the book White Roses should be made available in many languages. So far it has been translated into French, Russian, German, Hindi, Oriya and Tamil, as well the Gujarati translation done by myself. I have been asked by many to explain the title of the book.
One reason for it is the fact that whenever I went to the Mother she gave me white roses. Also white roses always accompanied the letters which she wrote to me, as well as the exquisite cards which she sent me unfailingly each morning.
A second reason is more personal, and I hesitate to mention it. But the title of the book would not be wholly viewed in the Mother’s Light unless I recounted some words of hers.
Wondering at the constant presence of these flowers, one day I asked the Mother about it. She smiled sweetly and answered:
“My child, whenever I see white roses they remind me of your heart — so pure.”
On another occasion she held in her hand a full-blown white rose and said with a charming smile:
“Look at this rose, isn’t it pretty? This is your soul — so pure, sweet and beautiful.”
Then after pressing the flower against her heart and caressing it, she gave the rose to me. I took it from the Mother with a silent smile, but with deep gratitude in my eyes when they met her blue-grey compassionate and luminous gaze.
The cover picture is of a bunch of white roses which the Mother sent to me to paint. I did so. Here is her comment:

I may also record what the Mother once serenely told me:
”You are the only person in the world to whom I have written so many letters.”
I can never cease feeling grateful to the Mother for making me her instrument, and I pray ardently to her that all of me may be one with the true self to which her vision penetrated.
Also I am very happy to share this splendid spiritual gift with the world, in the Supreme’s Light.

The Mother sent me a folder. On the front page I found the print of my own painting of the Golden Dahlia. The Mother gave the meaning to the painting:
Nobility of thought, feeling and action is true aristocracy.
On the second page she wrote:
Bonne Année!
To my dear little child

On the third page The Mother inscribed:
It is true that money is a force and a means, but it must never be allowed to become a ruler and a tyrant.
My dear little child,
You say you want to get rid of falsehood; here is a way.
Do not try to please yourself, do not try either to please the others.
Try only to please the Lord; because He alone is the Truth — Everyone of us, human beings, is a coat of falsehood put on the Lord and hiding Him.
He alone is true; He is the Truth.
It is on Him that we must concentrate, and not on the coats of falsehood.

Mother, I am most eager to know what the Lord — Sri Aurobindo — is doing in the world of subtle matter. I have finished reading “The Kingdom of Subtle Matter”, Canto Two, Savitri: Is He formless?
If he were formless he would not be Sri Aurobindo. I did not say the Lord. I said Sri Aurobindo. Sri Aurobindo is a permanent Avatar of the Lord (as Krishna is).
Is the Lord everywhere and in everything?
This is correct.
Can I ever see Him?
Certainly yes, if you remember your night activities. I have seen you there sometimes. You go there but you do not remember.
Can I even see the Supreme Lord?
One day you may see the Lord also but He has not a precise particular form and He is also beyond all forms.
That is why He sends upon earth His Avatar so that the human beings can more easily meet Him, see Him and get in contact with Him.
But He is always with us all and we can all be in constant contact with Him if we do the needful which is simply to love Him.
Always with you in the Eternal Love.
Mother, what is the difference between the Lord and Sri Aurobindo?
There is no essential difference, but the Lord is all and Sri Aurobindo is a part but conscious of the Supreme Lord of whom he is an emanation.
Where is Sri Aurobindo at the moment?
Sri Aurobindo is wherever he wants to be, because he is free; but he has a permanent home in the subtle physical (the region closest to the earth physical) where all those who wish to see him can go and see him.
What form has He got?
There, in the subtle physical, his form is similar to the one he had upon earth, but with the splendid peace of immortality.
What sort of world is the subtle physical?
This subtle physical (or true physical) is a world where things are and happen somewhat like in the physical here — but with a harmony, a beauty and a truth that do not yet exist upon earth.
You wrote to me that The Lord sends His Avatars so that human beings can more easily meet Him, and get in contact with Him. Sri Aurobindo is an Avatar. Yes, but He is not here, how can I see Him and get in contact with Him?
You do not remember because your mind is very active and remains active during your sleep — that is the cause of your restless sleeps, and also what prevents you from remembering what happens at the more quiet moments of your sleep.
So the aspiration to quiet your mind is the first step towards remembrance that is to say to become conscious of your relation with Sri Aurobindo — because you have one but you do not know it.

Behind the weakest weakness there is the supreme strength, the Lord’s Force.
Whenever you get upset or disturbed, remember that it is the EGO that gets upset and disturbed and tell him “I do not want you get away, out of me.”
Huta my dear little child,
I have received and read your letters.
In the last one of the 11th I retain your prayer to be freed from the ego on your birthday; that is to say to be born to the Truth on that day. — This is a big demand and I answer by a big yes; I am ready to make that gift.
But you must know one thing.
To be only aware of the gift, you must have first the receptivity and then the assimilation. Without these two things you will not even know that the new consciousness is given. Then, when you have received and assimilated, to enjoy the new consciousness you must keep it constantly in front, in your active consciousness. Then you will become a new person and feel free, happy and strong.
I tell you all that, so that you may prepare yourself; useless to add that my help is always with you; but you must avail yourself of it.

The “active consciousness” is the usual consciousness that one of every day and every circumstance — the one in which and by which you live and act in the ordinary life.

Right or wrong is not the question. So many answers I have sent you (not written) to your letters, knowing very well that you would not be conscious of my answers but that, all the same, it would help.
One thing only remains to be said. Do not mistake your ego and your physical consciousness for yourself, because when you do so, they make you do and say what they want and not what you want, which does not help for the release you want....
Always with love
You say “the Ego and the physical consciousness are not me.”
It is your soul who can say that in truth. Certainly your soul is not the ego and the physical consciousness; but the mental, the vital and the physical beings have been formed by the ego and it is through the ego that they express themselves, it is through the ego that they get in contact with the others and react to these contacts.
This is the difficulty, this is why it is almost impossible to get rid of the ego without a Divine intervention.
It is always to your soul that I speak and your soul never misunderstands me; it is the ego that misunderstands and gets vexed.
It is always for your soul, the freedom, the peace and the happiness of your soul that I act and your soul knows it quite well, it never misunderstands me or gets hurt or sorry. It is the ego that feels hurt and gets sorry.
This which is an absolute and true fact can give you the measure of the mixing of the ego in your consciousness. The ego cannot be destroyed, but it can be overcome by a constant and complete separation from it. This is the necessary preparation I spoke of. The Supreme does not work by tricks and magic, because they are not true. The Supreme does not obey to the individual desires, because in that case He would be a slave and not the Lord.
He says, this will be done under these conditions. And what He says is done.
Now to make you fully understand, I shall explain something more. All the elements of the human consciousness which gather and organise themselves around the soul form, through thousands of lives, the psychic being. This psychic being when well constituted becomes the conscious intermediary between the soul and the physical being.
It is your psychic being who wants the Truth and Truth alone, your psychic being who has brought you here and keeps you here; it is in answer to the aspiration of your psychic who is ready for it, that I gave the assurance of the liberation.
When the psychic being gets this liberation, it feels the ego and the physical consciousness, merely as movements of the universal Nature outside itself, quite foreign to itself; and these movements can no more affect the psychic being in any way.
So, it will be in the measure of your remaining consciously one with your psychic being that you will be aware of this liberation. And when you will live constantly in the psychic consciousness, then you will enjoy all the happy consequences of this liberation.

You ask what is the difference between the liberation and the realisation.
The realisation of the soul is achieved when the whole being (including the physical consciousness and the ego) has got under the control of the soul through the psychic being, when all the activities of the being including the physical are governed exclusively by the soul in peace and quietness. This is the first step towards the Transformation which is the divinisation of the integral being and may come only after ages.
You say also that the realisation and the ego cannot go together. This is quite true and from the time of the realisation the nature of the ego is so much changed that we can say in truth that there is no more ego, although nothing is lost or wasted of what is represents in the evolution.
But all this needs a very patient endeavour.
Meanwhile, in spite of all adverse circumstances, try to get back into this detached condition in which the material things lose their hard reality.
It is the surest way to get rest.

To be aware of the liberation of your soul means that you are sufficiently conscious of your soul to feel that something deep in you is quite free, independent from people and circumstances, untouched by grief, displeasure or anger, always calm and with a quiet contentment.
This feeling can come suddenly or progressively and can stay for more or less time — all depends on how much and how often your consciousness is in contact with your soul.
The aim is that it should be constant, but this comes later on and little by little when all the parts of your being turn towards your soul instead of turning to the exterior, the physical consciousness and being caught in it.
The best way to hasten this change is the habit of going within.
For going within you must sit comfortably or lie down, gather and bring back all the threads of your consciousness which are tied up to all the people and the things around you, all what you think of, all what you want to do, etc. etc.
Once this is done you focus all your attention inside yourself, deep inside your chest and you concentrate there until you reach a state of peace and immobility. You may not succeed from the first time — but you will try again and again until you succeed. — In the state of quiet and silent immobility you will be in contact with your soul, unite with it and feel free.
Naturally with the practice all that becomes more and more easy and spontaneous.
Indeed you are very clever and you know quite well how to argue.
Yet there are two points on which I have something to say:
You ask at what time I pray, in order to join in the prayer. But you see, I have not a time for prayer or meditation. This body lives constantly night and day, even when apparently it is busy with something else, in an invocation to the Supreme Lord, asking Him to manifest His supreme Truth in this world of falsehood, and His supreme Love in this world of disharmony. So at any time when you feel like praying, you can do so and your prayer is sure to join mine.
The second point is that you say that the Lord gives to people prosperity, children and happiness whenever they ask for it. Quite true, but these things belong to the physical consciousness and need no preparation to be received; They (people) can have those things in remaining quite as they are.
While you are asking for the greatest thing of all, the most difficult, the Truth — and to receive the Truth one must be prepared for it, capable of seeing and feeling it — and this demands a big preparation. In fact the Truth is always with us, and if we do not see It and feel It it is because we are not capable of seeing and feeling it. This is the reason of the delay. The Lord answers at once all sincere prayer, but we are not aware of His answer.

Sending you a quotation which is quite appropriate.
The one need for you and for all is to be, even in the darkness of the powers of obscurity of the physical consciousness, stubbornly faithful to your soul and to the remembrance of the Divine Call.

All human beings are full of desires; their life is built up by desires. The will of man is made of desire, his needs are desires. He can get rid of all these desires only by a constant vigilance and a steady elimination.
Each time that you feel excited or annoyed, each time that you are upset, you can be sure that there is a desire lurking behind the appearances.
The sign of the true and Divine Consciousness is perfect equality, constant equanimity and peace.
Excitement, irritation, sorrow, depression, upsettings, belong all to the Physical Consciousness, and must be surmounted in order to get rid of the falsehood.
I am doing all that is needed but in my way, the right way. You need not bother about that.
Now child I remind you once more that you must not get excited and upset — that you must not have useless fears.
With my name send the fear away. Fear is the worst thing. A child of mine must never fear.
It is all this excitement and this upsetting and most of all, this fear that fall back upon you and disturb you so much.
Keep quiet in your mind, do not indulge in catastrophic imaginations and you will soon discover that the Victory of the Truth is certain because such is the Lord’s Will.

Most of the dreams are in the subconscient or in the vital — They can be useful for the inner progress, if properly understood. We can speak of that on the 18th. All love
This is an important letter — I have told you already many times that this world can not be changed all at a sudden by the swift stroke of a fairy’s magic wand. This world is a world of ignorance and falsehood and will remain so for still a pretty long time to come.
I told you that I could help you to find your soul and to unite with it and that, when that is done, your outlook of the world and your relation with it would change; you would no more be the slave of your sensations and of the outer circumstances, and, with the soul consciousness, you will be quiet and happy in spite of all outer events.
I never said that this is easy to realise but I told you that I could help you to have it and soon, provided you would allow it to be so. It goes without saying that each time you allow yourself to fall down heavily into the physical consciousness and the vital and physical ego, it means a delay.
Now again you speak of death as Nothingness, but this is quite untrue, it is a big falsehood. Death is not nothingness, death is only a transition between two earthly lives upon earth, and the nature of the transition depends on the quality of the previous life. To die does not solve the problem or overcome the difficulty.
So, instead of thinking of giving up your body — which is a useless and harmful action — you ought to give up the small, silly and selfish ego — and then all your troubles will be over.
Repeatedly, you have asked me to be frank. Now I have frankly told you the truth. It is left to you to show if you want it.
Do not hasten to answer. The ego is always in a hurry to react. Keep quiet, let the truth enter your brain and your nerves to make them calm. If you have some more questions to put, you will ask them on the 26th, when we meet next.

“Let your soul take, in silence, possession of your whole being, and let the Truth reign for ever over your consciousness”.
This is the only escape, the escape from the ego — there is no other true escape but that one.
It is that I want for you and from you and nothing else.
With true Love
Upon earth, each human being has his own way of seeing and feeling things, and as two of these ways are not same, each one is different from all the others; so everybody disagrees with the others in one way or another and no real harmony can be established. This is why the world is such a painful chaos.
The Lord alone with His total vision can create a harmony, by putting each being and each thing at its right place, if the world surrenders to Him unreservedly. For it is only by uniting with Him that we can realise a harmony in our existence and get thus protected from the surrounding disharmony.
This is the only remedy.
The difficulties and mishaps are tests and must be considered as a Grace from the Lord — and then they will become so and lead you quickly to your goal.
For your ill health, do not forget to try to bring down the divine peace — Because no illness can resist the Peace of the Lord, and even to remember and to try will give you some relief.

It is in the subconscient that you went last night; in the subconscient where are accumulated all the past impressions, thoughts, feelings, emotions, fears, disgusts, etc., etc. rejected from the aspiring consciousness, but still hoping to come back at the surface at the first occasion — it is a world of concentrated falsehood where all is distorted, falsified, degraded. It is one of the places where the Divine is not only denied and unknown but violently disobeyed and rejected.
Before going to sleep, pray not to go there again, and to remain under the Divine protection.
On my side I shall do what can be done to help.
This subconscient world is one of the places where wander those who have put an end violently to their physical life. It is wiser to avoid going there at all.
Mother, then what is the vital world and its stuff? Is it the same as the subconscient or a bit civilised?
The vital world is quite different from the physical subconscient which is closely connected with human beings. The vital world is inhabited by vital beings who are not human, some are very beautiful and resemble gods, some are hideously ugly, but all or almost all are anti-divine and try always to turn human beings away from their Divine Goal. The vital world itself in its higher regions is very beautiful, dangerously beautiful and attractive — in its lower parts it is dark and frightful. One must not go into the vital world without a special purpose or command and a special protection.
O Mother, is there any end to these horrible worlds and the miseries of human beings?
There will be an end but not without a struggle.
Mother, you wrote in your letter, “There will be an end but not without a struggle.” What type of struggle is it?
It is mostly a psychological struggle.
Mother, you wrote, “One must not go into the vital world without a special purpose, command and a special protection.” True. But what are special purpose or command and a special protection?
What I mean by special purpose is a work given by the Divine who then gives His special protection.
Do you make anyone go there?
I send nobody purposely into the vital world. But have helped several people who were in the habit of going there.
I believe, a perfect purity and fearlessness are needed for the vital world, otherwise one gets lost in that world.
Yes.
Mother, if the world of the Subconscient is not conquered, the things are likely to come back to the surface. There is no use to suppress them — the Subconscient world must be conquered. So please make me surmount this terrible world.
This is quite true.
Mother, the other day I had a vision of a red-gold snake — very humble, and as if it was swimming into the golden Light. Its tail was up and the head was down — trying to touch something which was below. I wish the head could touch all these horrible worlds. And then, goodness me! everything nasty would vanish, how wonderful!
It is indeed the supramentalised energy.
What is the purpose and importance of the vital world in the spiritual life? Does the vital world help in any way?
The vital is most important for the transformation of the physical but its importance is rather little for those who want to escape life rather than transform it.
Mother, I wonder, if you were not upon this earth, what would happen to poor human beings? Bless Your Sweet Heart! You are here!

But the Divine’s Help and Grace are with us and we are sure to succeed.
Mother, you wrote: “The dangers are great and many. The task is difficult and long…” You can do everything. I know. You can change impossibilities into possibilities. You can lighten the difficulties whatever they are. You can also shorten the long distance. Only, please let me have true understanding, true discrimination and unshaken faith and confidence in you to collaborate fully.
What I can do is to help those who have full faith, realise in this present life what, otherwise, take hundreds of lives to realise.
Mother I shall have to reach my goal, otherwise my soul will never keep quiet, I know that.
Yes, your soul wants the whole of your being to be free.
Finally I pray to you to do whatever you find the best. I am yours.

It is bound to be because it cannot be otherwise.

There is only one Will governing the world; it is the will of the Lord (I am only His executive power). He is supreme Wisdom and supreme Truth and He alone knows what is truly good for each one and everybody.
Perhaps He does not find it wise to give you all at a sudden in a miraculous way what all the sages and the saints of the world take a long life to obtain — I am speaking of the Liberation.
If you could have it at once I would be happy. That is all I can say. But surely He knows better. However I am telling Him all that — and we shall see what happens.
Only let me suggest that you should join your prayer to mine — it might bring a quicker result.
I have asked Sri Aurobindo to help you with an advice, to realise your goal, and he has put this sentence in my hand for you.
Surely this will help your mind to understand and to take the right attitude.

The difficulties that come are ordeals and tests and if one meets them in the right spirit, one comes out stronger and spiritually purer and greater.

I got your letter and just now finished reading it. There is no time to answer just now, but hope to do so tomorrow. I can say that most of the dreams come from the subconscious. It is old movements pushed away from the consciousness trying again to manifest. To answer to these undesired movements by the name of the Lord is certainly the best thing to do and the most effective way to get rid of them.
As for the other night activities and the things I tell you during your sleep, they will become more and more clear to you, and one day you will remember them quite clearly and exactly.
What the Lord wants for us is always the supreme good, and it is only our ignorance which prevents us from seeing and feeling it.
The best way of being cured from all falsehood is a perfect, integral and absolute faith in the Divine.
Just received the very beautiful dahlia. It is “true nobility in the vital”, that is to say nobility of feelings, sensations and character.
Let it be integrally realised.

What should the Ashramites, if they truly wish to transform themselves totally, do in order to make things easy for themselves, for others and for the Mother as well?
By definition, the Ashramite has resolved to dedicate his life to the Divine Realisation. But to be true to his resolution he must be sincere, faithful, modest and grateful in his consecration, because these qualities are indispensable for all progress, and progress, a steady and rapid progress is indispensable to follow the pace of Nature’s evolutionary advance.
Without these qualities, one may have sometimes the appearance of progress but it is only an appearance, a pretence, and at the first occasion it crumbles down.
To be sincere all the parts of the being must be united in their aspiration for the Divine — not that one part wants and the others refuse or revolt to be sincere in the aspiration, — to want the Divine for the Divine’s sake, not for fame or name or prestige or power or any satisfaction of the vanity.
To be faithful and steady in their consecration, — not to have faith one day and the next one, because things are not as they wish them to be, to lose their faith and shelter all sorts of doubts. Doubt is not a sport to indulge in with impunity; it is a poison which drop by drop corrodes the soul.
To be modest means to have the correct appreciation of what one is, and never to forget that whatever are one’s achievements, they are practically nothing in comparison with what one ought to be to fulfil the Lord’s expectation.
And above all to feel in an absolute way one’s own incapacity to judge the Divine and his ways.
To be grateful, never to forget this wonderful grace of the Supreme who leads each one to his divine goal by the shortest ways, in spite of himself, his ignorance and misunderstandings, in spite of the ego, its protests and its revolts.
The pure flame of gratefulness must always burn in our heart, warm, sweet and bright, to dissolve all egoism and all obscurity; the flame of gratefulness for the Supreme’s Grace who leads the sadhak to his goal — and the more he is grateful, recognises this action of the Grace and is thankful for it, the shorter is the way.
What attitude should they take when their consciousness is covered completely by the dark cloud of falsehood and they cannot even pray to the Lord for His help?
Here is Sri Aurobindo’s answer, the best that can be given to the second question.
Cast away from you these movements of doubt, depression and the rest which are not part of your true and higher nature.
Reject these suggestions of inability, unfitness and all these irrational movements of an alien force. Remain faithful to the Light of your soul even when it is hidden by clouds. My help and the Mother’s will be there working behind even in the moments when you cannot feel it. The one need for you and for all is to be, even in the darkness of the powers of obscurity of the physical consciousness, stubbornly faithful to your soul and to the remembrance of the Divine Call. Be faithful and you will conquer.
How can they be perfectly faithful and sincere to the New Light and the Truth? They must not waste these wonderful things, must they?
What is the true way to love the Mother and the Lord more and more intensely with an unshaken faith and to give sincerely in every way to the Divine’s work their collaboration which is the Dharma of each soul who is here?
To want it and to want only that
Yes, bring the copies with you when you come on the 29th.
Surely I shall see you on the 29th.

Let the Lord’s love fill your heart and life.
If you go on listening and believing all the lies that people say, you will sink deeper and deeper in falsehood, and go further and further from the Supreme Lord.
Yet His love will always be with you, even if you make yourself incapable of feeling it.
Wake up, child, shake off the ugly obsession, and become once more your true self.
Let each one do his very best and peacefully leave to the Supreme the care of the result.
Your pretty rose itself answers your question, “what to do?”
Surrender to the Lord and allow him to make you peaceful and content.
Why do you not feel the Divine?
He is in your heart.
If the transformation you are asking for depended on me alone it is long since it would have been done.
With all my heart I want it for you.
But the whole world is One and interdependant and this creates a situation that alone the Supreme Lord can alter.

Let the past be past — not only past but also forgotten, so that the day may come soon when it will be in the impossibility of coming back again and making your life miserable.
Remain always open to the Lord’s Love
Your prayer “There should be in my life only one Love, one Truth and that is the Lord” is exactly what I always want and will always want for you.
Nothing, even the darkest falsehood, can stop the ultimate triumph of Truth.
I had a dream of a black snake which changed its colour gradually and finally became almost white and disappeared.
Yes, this is exactly the way in which the darkness will be changed in Light and the difficulties in opportunities.
The Lord’s help and love are with you.
Everything changes constantly, except the Eternal Love.
The Mother sent me delightful quotations on 23. 11. 64:
Be fearless and resolute, all obstacles will melt away before you.
Remain in my arms, enveloped by my love and blessings.
LOVE is the secret and Love is the means.
I saw the Mother’s luminous look in my dream. But she did not say anything to me.
The look was surely more important than the speech: what is not said is always much more important than what is said.
LOVE is the supreme Victor
When I felt strongly that the Truth was emerging from the far horizon and making the darkness of Falsehood vanish, I expressed my feeling to the Mother through a letter.
Your feeling is quite correct.
There are signs of that change everywhere in the world.
So your hope is true.
The Lord’s action through the Supreme Mother is the spontaneous result of the dharma of each being and everything, direct, absolute and true.
Human action is based on feelings or principles — feelings in those who are impulsive, principles in those who are governed by reason.
Human beings love some and not others, love sometimes and sometimes not.
The Lord’s love is constant, equal, universal, unchanging — permanent.
Love for ever
This year we salute the advent of the Truth — and aspire for the manifestation of the Eternal Love.
Indeed there is nothing impossible.
You did quite well to come to me yesterday, and there was nothing to be confused about as I saw you.
It is true that you are my child and I am your mother, but I am a mother with a few thousands of children so, no wonder if I am very busy.
Inside it is not difficult, but physically it is more complicated — and each one must be patient.
Yes, the true aim of life is to unite with one’s soul and to merge in the Supreme.
So this will be done.

Certainly I wish peace for everybody; but — as you know it quite well yourself — peace does not depend on outward circumstances, peace comes from a constant contact with one’s soul.

The Mother’s answer:
Those who wish to help the Light of Truth to prevail over the forces of darkness and falsehood can do so by carefully observing the initiating impulses of their movements and actions, and discriminate between those that come from the truth and those that come from the falsehood in order to obey the first and to refuse or reject the others.
This power of discrimination is one of the first effects of the advent of the Truth’s light in the earth’s atmosphere.
Indeed it is very difficult to discriminate the impulses of Truth from the impulses of falsehood, unless one has received this special gift of discrimination that the Light of Truth has brought.
However, to help at the beginning, one can take as a guiding rule that all that brings with it or creates peace, faith, joy, harmony, wideness, unity and ascending growth comes from the Truth; while all that carries with it restlessness, doubt, scepticism, sorrow, discord, selfish narrowness, inertia, discouragement and despair comes straight from the falsehood.
The Grace is on all and does for each one the best for his spiritual progress regardless of what he feels or thinks.
As for the forgetfulness, more you remember your soul more you will forget outward circumstances. You will remember only what must be remembered, and this is very good.
My dear little child Huta,
I have heard you early this morning, it was about at half past four.
You were asking about the Lord and what I meant by the sentence which appeared in “White Roses” and was badly translated in Bengali.
I have explained everything in detail, but this cannot be written.
The Mother sent me a Message which she was going to distribute on her birthday — She wrote:
To Huta
February 21, 1965
Above all the complications of the so-called human wisdom stands the luminous simplicity of the Divine’s Grace, ready to act if we allow it to do so.
What happens to you is the normal progress in the course of the “sadhana”. You must not be anxious over it.
Everything is all right and the Victory of the Lord is certain.
It is true that this world is a very dangerous one where falsehood is still in full swing. That is why Sri Aurobindo says:
“Only were safe who kept God in their hearts.”
Fear not, you are on the right side.
On the night of March 17th, I did a painting of a dark-grey figure for fun — because some colours had been left on the palette after I had done a few paintings of Savitri — the great epic-poem written by Sri Aurobindo. The Mother saw the painting, kept it with herself and wrote to me:
It is the portrait of the devil who is in each and every one before he gets rid of the falsehood!
Here is what I have written on the subject. I am sending it to you, as it answers your questions. I intend to put it in the Bulletin.
Behind all the destructions — the big destructions of nature — earthquakes, volcanoes, eruptions, cyclones etc… or the human destructions — war, revolutions, riots — there is always Kali’s power and upon earth Kali works for the hastening of the terrestrial progress.
Whatever is Divine not only in its essence but also in its realisation is above these destructions and cannot be touched by them. In all cases the extent of the damage gives the measure of the imperfection and must be taken as a lesson for indispensable progress.
On 1. 3. 65 the Mother gave a talk to me about the Lord, which I typed and sent to her for correction. The same day I received the papers corrected:.
Sri Aurobindo is the Lord. He is part of the Lord. But He is not the whole of the Lord, though His Consciousness is one with the Lord’s Consciousness.
He is leading us to the Lord.
The Mother added the following:
There is nothing that is not the Lord. The Lord is all that is manifested and also all that is not manifested.
But very few are those who are conscious of the Lord, and it is this unconsciousness that constitutes the falsehood of the world.

He who chooses the Infinite has been chosen by the Infinite.
One more message from Sri Aurobindo for you.
The Divine gives itself to those who give themselves without reserve and in all their parts to the Divine. For them the calm, the light, the power, the bliss, the freedom, the wideness, the heights of knowledge, the seas of Ananda.
Here is Sri Aurobindo’s answer to your letter — But the Grace is always there to help those who have faith in It.
What we have within us creates the circumstances outside us.
Shiva is the Lord of Transformation. What is the difference between Kali and Shiva? Surely Kali is not less powerful; she too changes everything.
I received the Mother’s answer on 13. 3. 65:
Kali is the Mother and Shiva is her son.
Love will be the final Victor.
I repeat LOVE as it is the Lord’s Love.
Surely you cannot refuse it!
Your soul is immortal and lives in eternal love.
Only Love can recognise and feel Love.
Love the Lord full heartedly and all will be well.

It is not what one sees or hears that one loves. It is Love that one loves through the forms and the sounds. And the most perfect love, the most lovable love is the Lord’s Love.

Here is Sri Aurobindo’s assurance in answer to your love.
At the end, the flickerings of faith will cease; for we shall see His Face and feel always the Divine Presence.
On my asking for something to read, Amal Kiran — K.D. Sethna — gave me a book but warned me that it was frightful. But I still read it. According to my sensitiveness and receptivity I felt strongly as if the evil spirit which played an active part in the book’s account were haunting me all the time — I even felt it breathing very close to me. In fact I identified myself with it. As a result I could not sleep for three nights. Eventually I had to inform the Mother. I also sent the book and prayed to her to free me from its influence, and remove the bad effect from my mind.
Well, as you have taken the decision to read no more such books and as I will help you to keep your decision, the nasty book will have had its good effect — and we will think no more of it! I am giving a good cleaning to your mind — do not make it dirty any more.
On the night of 12th April I felt the tangible Presence of Mother Durga.
I was lying in my bed. She stood behind my head, stretching out her numerous arms over me. Her arms were slightly uplifted. She kept her protection over me all through the night.
Yes, Durga was with you last night, and I am happy you slept well.
I dreamed of a vast sea with red and brown waves sticky like glue. Human beings were struggling in them. I was flying above them and I eventually disappeared into the sky. I also dreamed of a white boat.
This dream is still an activity in the vital — but this one is a good one as you could fly and escape the vital mess in which most of the human beings are submerged.
The white boat is a sign of peace.
I am sending you Sri Aurobindo’s answer to your prayer — just the right answer.
Strive rightly and thou shalt have; trust and thy trust shall in the end be justified.
Huta, my dear child,
To do Yoga, which would mean the study of Sri Aurobindo’s books.
Sri Aurobindo has written — most wonderfully — all that can be said on Savitri — I have nothing to add to it. But surely I shall help you to do all the paintings with the proper inspiration.
You are right — nothing can harm your soul and the victory of the Truth is certain.
In answer to my letter dated 17. 5. 65, the Mother wrote in general:
In this material world, for men, money is more sacred than the Divine’s Will.
To each one the Supreme Lord gives what he asks for. To the one who loves money He gives money, to that one who loves The Divine He gives the Divine Consciousness and ultimately He gives Himself.
The Lord is always, everywhere and constantly victorious, but in His own way, not according to human conceptions, He always gives Himself, but human beings are too crude to feel it. However a sincere and constant aspiration is sure to bring the realisation — and the greater the faith, the quicker the way.
The feeling you are expressing is just the feeling the Lord wants us to have because it is indispensable to make the world ready to manifest Him — So continue to find that the change ought to come quicker and thus very soon you will be able to feel the Lord’s presence near you protecting, comforting and strengthening you with His all pervading Love.
When someone is entirely dedicated to the Divine, for this one the opinions of others are of little importance.
Huta, dear little child of mine
You can be absolutely sure that the Lord is always doing the very best for the Truth.
I quite understand your feelings — But have you thought of this? If all the good people were to leave this world then the bad ones only would stay and what would happen to the world? It would become a true Hell.
So the good people must courageously endure in order to make the world better and to lead it to its salvation. And their reward for this unselfishness is that the Lord is always with them.
Do not be afraid. The Lord is more powerful than Death and the Lord is with you.
Yes, this world is full of falsehood.
But for yourself you must be above all that and take shelter in the Lord’s arms because it is the only shelter that never fails.
I like jokes and appreciated your letter very much. The Lord also likes jokes and it must be in His heart that you learnt to be humorous!
Quite true, in the presence of the Lord’s peace the falsehood runs away in shame!
My dearest little child Huta,
Your soul is there conscious and active in your body, and your soul is strong of the Lord’s strength.
That will protect you against any bad-will that others can throw upon you.
Now you will feel that the Truth is sure to conquer.
My love and force are all around you.
More than ever, take refuge in the Lord and keep aloof from all the crookedness of the ordinary human consciousness.

If sincerely you want the Truth, you must first abstain from believing all the stories that people tell you, not always with a very harmonious intention.
Rise above the falsehood, live in the pure light of your soul, and you will be close, very close to the Lord.
The Lord has a million forms and shows Himself to each one according to his or her aspiration and need.
Lions are indeed very nice, I have always at least one lion with me, but not physically because people are too frightened and their fear makes a mess….
The Lord is with those who love the Truth and His power helps them to conquer.
... But it is evident that Truth and Love are not quite welcome just now upon earth, because the human heart is not yet ready for them — and if they were enforced upon the human consciousness by an act of Power, they would no more be the Truth and the Love, but something artificial.
That is why the collaboration of the human consciousness is indispensable, and the way is long and arduous.
However the Divine Grace is there always and each fall can be changed into a springing board for a new progress —

The Lord wants you to live and to become conscious of His Presence, because that is the only way to get out of all trouble.
There is nothing to add to that, but to obey.
... the world is still in the power of the wicked.
Truth is sure to conquer one day and the Grace is always there unfailing.
Those who keep their faith steady, are safe.
Yes, the only safety is to keep the faith strong and steady in the heart.
I went to the Mother on 21. 9. 65 for our Savitri-work as arranged. Meanwhile she asked me:
Do you know the war is going on?
I said:
Yes, Mother, every day I hear the news on the radio. Mother, who will win the war — India surely and not Pakistan.
She nodded and said:
India and Pakistan must become one. By the way, have you read the message I sent to the Prime Minister — Mr. Sastri?
No, Mother.
Then she herself went into her living room from her music-cum-interview room and fetched the message and gave it to me, asking me to read it there and then and keep it.
I read as follows:
It is for the sake and the triumph of Truth that India is fighting and must fight until India and Pakistan have once more become One because that is the truth of their being.
I asked the Mother:
If the Security Council orders them to cease fire, then?
The Mother said:
India must still fight. Otherwise she will have to do it all over again.
The red rose is very sweet indeed.
Among the souls there are no small and no big, no important and no ordinary. They are all equal and all divine as their Origin.
As for the help it is always given.
My very dear little child Huta
My help is with you and will never fail you. My love is with you and will never fail you. I am indeed the friend of the bad days and the companion in the ascent towards the Truth, where the Lord will carry you for ever in His all-mighty arms.
Very dear little child of mine
Your soul is always with me and so close to me; a great love unites us, and if you keep a constant contact with your soul you will feel at least the comfort of this Love which compensates most of the world’s miseries.
The worse the circumstances the greatest the love of the Lord.
Think only of the Lord, concentrate only on the Lord, take refuge in the Lord and you will feel that to be near Him compensates all possible miseries, even the physical ones.
The Lord always listens and always answers but to be aware of His answer certain conditions have to be fulfilled.
In the early morning of the 19th I had in my sleep the experience that the Lord gave me in writing the conditions, numbered one after another, which have to be fulfilled. But on waking I forgot what I had read.
Indeed the Lord told you what are the essential conditions to fulfill and especially that the most essential of all are
1) unconditional confidence and trust in the Divine.
2) an unshaking and steady faith.
3) no yielding to the suggestions of falsehood.
There are some more of these conditions which I can let you know if you want.
Your letter of yesterday evening.
Certainly, those who are self-willed have often to face hardships in order to learn the lesson.
On this occasion, here is one more of the Lord’s “conditions”.
“Never mistake your desires for the Truth, nor believe that your personal will is the Lord’s Will.”
The Lord’s will is Truth in action; the personal will is distorted by the limitations of the ego.
When the ego is surrendered, then the Lord’s Will becomes harmoniously manifested.
A sincere and constant aspiration is the shortest and surest way towards the goal, that is to say, the conscious union with the Lord.
I have asked Sri Aurobindo to help you with an advice, to realise your goal and he has put this sentence in my hand for you.
The Mother gave the following message personally and said:
Child, the sentence in Sanskrit is from Veda — it is a Mantra — repeat it.
आयाहि सत्य आविर्भव ।
ĀYĀHI SATYA ĀVIRBHAVA.
O Truth, come, manifest.
With Eternal
Keep an absolute faith and confidence in the Lord, for everything even the most material things, and all will be all right.
The Truth is sure to prevail in spite of all oppositions.
Indeed if you truly leave everything to the Lord’s care, your heart will be in peace, and all things will be the best possible.
“Leave the care of your life to the Lord, in all sincerity, and your heart will be at peace.”
A rule for each and every one.
“Do your best, and leave the result to the Lord. — The Lord is looking to everything.”
I sent a card to the Mother on Darshan Day — 24. 11. 65. I received from her the following message with her love:
It is certainly a mistake to bring down the light by force — to pull it down. The Supramental cannot be taken by storm. When the time is ready it will open itself— but first there is a great deal to be done and that must be done patiently and without haste.
The Lord says it is better to laugh than to weep.
I read in the November 1965 Bulletin “Notes on the Way” bearing on physical transformation and the experiences the Mother was having. The closing words were:
“If it remains....”
I wrote to the Mother asking why there was that “If”. Then I mentioned the world of Falsehood by which we are surrounded, and questioned her, “What will happen to sincere aspirants when You are no more?”
You have just voiced the thoughts of so many people. And I have only one answer to make. It is the Will of the Lord that will be realised — and the sincere people must know that more they are steady and ardent in their faith, more easy and quick will be the Realisation.
How am I to know that I have overcome the activities of the subconscient in my sleep?
When your nights will become quiet and peaceful.
What comes next to be conquered after the subconscient?
The inconscient
When shall I know that I have achieved the higher consciousness?
When nothing will be able to disturb you any more and always you will feel happy.
Your prayer shall certainly be realised one day — Keep steady and it will come sooner.
At present the sadhana is bringing down the higher forces (forces of Truth and Love) into the material planes to prepare the transformation.
That is why so much work is done in the subconscient. And after the subconscient will come, last, the inconscient which will be prepared to become conscious, and with the end of the inconscient will dawn the time of the Transformation which will bring with it not only the knowledge but also the experience of all the worlds, even the highest.
So, you can be sure that your aspiration will be fulfilled.
Be in Peace.
Henceforth, the Lord alone is your father, and alone those who are true and sincere children of the Lord are your brothers and sisters united by the Eternal Love for and from the Lord.
Learn to call me in your dreams — and you will see the result.
These dreams mean that your subconscient is still full of memories of the people of which you dream.
This kind of dream will stop with the purification of the subconscient.
The best way is indeed to pray for the purification, and the needful will be done.

Your wonderful message: “Let us serve the Truth”. Has the Truth come on the earth — if so, where does It dwell — where is it at the moment?
The Truth is present upon earth and dwells wherever there is a receptivity or a consciousness ready to manifest it.
In what way should people serve the Truth? Is it to be served outwardly as well as inwardly?
Whoever is sincere in his resolution to serve the Truth will know, or rather made to know, at each moment what he or she must do to serve the Truth for there are many ways of serving It.
My very dear little child, I am with you. Alone Truth and Love are eternal. All that opposes or contradicts them is bound to disappear...
Be courageous and endure.
There is nobody perfectly true and nobody completely false, that is why it is so difficult to make the difference.
There is no better protection than the Grace. Keep confident and all will be all right.
My very dear little child Huta,
The best is to smile, not to give a thought to it, and to concentrate on something more interesting — the only thing really interesting — the Lord, His Truth, His Love and His work.
More and more you will be my true daughter who remains for ever sheltered in my arms.
The Mother sent me these beautiful words from her own writing:
“O my sweet Lord,
Teach me to be the instrument of Thy Love.”

Live within, in the depth of your heart, and nobody or nothing will have the power to disturb you.
Your Supreme Father hears your prayers and what is best for you will surely be done.
You are my little child for ever and will more and more feel the joy and peace of being so.

To become aware of one’s deficiencies is a sign of great progress and the door open on the road to success in sadhana. So rejoice and feel confident — all is well.
With all my Love
Truth does not depend on any exterior form, and will manifest in spite of all bad will and opposition.
The outer movements are passing moods and must not be given too much importance. The only thing to be very careful about is to keep intact the faith and the aspiration.
Nobody really deserves the Divine’s Grace, but it is a question of appreciating and enjoying.
I am not looking at defects but at possibilities.
The Lord loves you and you are sure to reach your goal.
But you must be PATIENT.
Along with the card the Mother sent me a quotation from Sri Aurobindo:
Fix not the time and way in which thy ideal shall be fulfilled. Work and leave time and way to God all-knowing.
I have left everything to the Lord. It is He who decides and will always decide for this body. As yet, for this matter, He has not let me know His will. That is why I have not answered.
Of one thing you can be sure.
The Lord’s Will is the Truth in everything and everywhere always.
Indeed, true love is always patient. It is only desire that is impatient.
Whatever progress is done, we are always far from the luminous and divine Goal. So we can always feel deficient and powerless. But if we keep intact our faith in the Supreme Grace, we can go on striving in peace and joy, certain of the final victory.
Friendship is a very good thing and has its place in Divine Life. It is only desires and sexuality that lower the atmosphere and make it vulgar.
I wrote to the Mother on 1. 4. 66:
When a man and woman are friends what attitude should they take in order to be refined friends — without any kind of desires?
Live in the psychic consciousness and not in the vital and the material.
If there were no falsehood all around, there would be no need of faith because everybody would live spontaneously in the Truth.
It is with the ardent and constant Faith that we fight the falsehood.
All illnesses, especially like that of your small finger, are attacks from adverse forces (that is what I call mischief) to test our endurance and try to break down our faith — We must answer to them by more endurance and more faith — like that they go away badly defeated and it makes one Victory for the truth. The more we endure the more Force and the Love of the Lord are with us and greater is the joy of the Victory.
The Divine does not want a partial and passing victory. His victory must be total and everlasting. That is why we have to endure and wait for the proper time to come. However with faith and confidence, even the endurance becomes easy.
Keep courage, the bad dreams will go and the health will be restored.
When the Lord has decided something it is bound to happen whatever are the resistances.

Truth and Love are sure to conquer
The Truth is not always what we think it to be and the ways of the Lord are innumerable.
Just read your very sweet letter and can assure you that the health is good— there is only a big strain for the work of transformation and sometimes the strain becomes visible, but it is nothing to worry about.
Surely I shall find time to write what I have said about the Truth and the Lord.
It will be done as you say.
Here is my constant prayer to our Lord.
“O my beloved Lord, let Thy Will be done, Thy Will alone, without any resistance or opposition. Thy will is our happiness and our security.”
It is by wanting what the Lord wants that we get constant Peace.
I am quite sure the Lord is doing the change as quick as we allow him to do. If we are disgusted with the present state of the world, how much more He must be disgusted, He who has no affinity at all with the reigning falsehood!......
You are always sheltered deep in my heart and no adverse force has the power to take you away from there.
You say that Auroville is a dream. Yes, it is a “dream” of the Lord and generally these “dreams” turn up to be true, much more true than the human so-called realities!
Sometimes not to give blessings is a greater Grace than to give.
When I speak of love it is always of the Lord’s Love which manifests only in Truth.

The Mother sent me a quotation from her own writing on 16. 7. 66:
Each Victory we win over the obscure physical Nature is promise of a greater one to come.
The cake was indeed very good.
I am sending back the second one as “prasad” because the Lord takes this material food through us only and if you eat this cake He will have the “rasa” of it through you.
While writing I must have forgotten to write Solution and meant that love is the victor over all difficulties.

The Lord arranges our lives for the best of our souls and his wisdom is infinite and perfect.
Goodness! Why do you listen to all these stories!... they simply spoil your mind and your sadhana. But you must know that in each of my children and every one of them, whenever they think, speak or act under the impulse of falsehood it acts on my body like a blow.
So, do not listen to all these silly stories and think only of the Love Divine!
Alice, my American friend, informed me that some people told her unreasonable things about me, and warned her not to be friendly with me. I asked her to write to the Mother about the matter and seek her opinion about me. She did so and wrote to me on 31. 8. 1966:
Dear Huta,
The reply came from the Mother this morning, She has written:
“Be a friend of Huta without fear. If you love me, She will love you.
Some people have the bad habit of talking too much. When you talk much you are bound to speak nonsense.
The best is not to listen to them and to attach no importance to what they say.
When one has a big heart one can have friends and be faithful to them, — provided the friends love the Divine.’
So there you are! Isn’t it beautiful? And of course (as I knew) you were right.

Your heart and mind can be in peace. The Lord is always present, even when people believe He is not there and His conscious Will pervades everything.

Material things ought not to be the cause of happiness or unhappiness. To be one with the soul is the only way of being constantly happy; all the rest is of little importance.
To want the Divine alone is certainly the right thing.
But when one has no attachment, there is no need of “breaking off” — one can have a quiet and harmonious relation with all those whom one knows — a relation that exists only in the Lord.
Never forget that the greater the difficulties, the greater also our possibilities.
It is only those who have great capacities and a big future who meet with great obstacles and hardships.
The Lord’s love is always with you.
I have just read your good letter and I am happy. Transformation is far superior to destruction — This world is indeed very sad, but it can be and it will be transformed

I have nothing to say about 67 — except that Sri Aurobindo has written that 4. 5. 67 will see the beginning of the Supramental Power acting upon earth.
People are fond of prophecies, but I refuse to do some because in order to be understood by the human mind, they limit the Truth and make it narrow.
The Lord has heard your prayer, sweet and true, and He says:

Keep your faith, aspiration and confidence, be sure that the very best in the present condition of the world, is done for you — and every thing will be all right.
The Divine’s Grace is there to help and save.
In my dream I saw people being slaughtered and there was clamour everywhere. It was very vivid. I too was there but happily saved by the Grace!
You are conscious of the world’s struggle, but also of the Grace who saves...
In my dream I saw a being who was changing his forms and who tried to kill me as he had killed several others. But I killed him with a strange curved dagger. It was so concrete that I felt blood was dripping from my fingers. I was frightened and wrote to The Mother about this “murder”.
If you kill the enemy of your progress, you cannot call it a murder — it is a liberation! There is a new strength growing in you — the strength to conquer all that which, in your nature, prevents you from reaching your goal. So this is quite all right.

The Light, the Peace and the Love of the Lord always
The way to get out of trouble is not to escape from the world (which is a rather impossible endeavour) but to transform the world, beginning by the transformation of oneself. This is the only sure and practical way.
Nothing is more precious than Love.
Indeed it is the supreme Power.
But you are right, the only thing that truly matters is to realise the Divine — and that is sure to be.
What the Lord sees, that will happen. There is only to remain sheltered in His arms and all will be all right.
To know what the Lord wills is the supreme wisdom. This can happen only in perfect silence of the mind.
To my immortal child with Immortal Love
I asked the Mother what actually she meant by “immortal”. She answered:
Immortal means “for which death does not exist” — the consciousness is immortal — only the material form dies.
The Mother wrote to me in answer to my letter:
Yesterday you said: “If I change myself the world will change around me.”
It was so very true.
Let the Divine love radiate through your being.
Indeed I am happy that you are feeling better and recovered the contact with your soul. It is a division in your being that makes you miserable when your mental pride fights against your psychic being and its love. But the psychic must conquer — because it is the psychic that leads to the Divine.
The psychic is sure to conquer — and then you will live a quiet, peaceful, happy and luminous life, constantly conscious of the Divine’s Presence and above all petty human reactions.
Of that you can be certain — and this certitude gives courage and patience to endure.

The help from the Lord is proportionate to the difficulties — so keep courage.
Wood makes always noises with the change of weather, from cold to hot and damp to dry especially in the night. It is quite a natural noise and there is nothing evil in it — all these fears are useless superstitions and must not be accepted.
I advise you to keep your couch in your sitting room, it looks quite nice, I have sat upon it and found it comfortable.
We must rise above all those ignorant ideas and feelings, have true faith in the Grace of the Lord — and health will naturally become much better— “a demain.”
Go deep, very deep down in the silence of your heart, and you will find the Lord there, radiant and merciful.
It is not an impression or an imagination, it is a concrete experience that fills you with a lasting and powerful joy.
... from the Truth’s point of view there is nothing superior or inferior. The Lord alone is, and only that which consciously expresses Him is true.
You can always write to me what you feel — But now I must tell you that it is exactly the condition in which you are which is the best to find the Supreme Lord. He is always there, close to those who suffer and feel lonely; ready to welcome them and give them the supreme comfort of His Love.
So, just call Him in all sincerity and you will see the effect.
Nobody knows the exact truth of things here. And each one speaks as if he knows, but in fact nobody knows.
If the Truth were revealed one day to all, most of the people here, like everywhere, would be terrified by the enormity of their ignorance and of their wrong interpretation.
So I advise all to be in peace and abstain from all judgement — it is safest.
At every moment we can wonder at the Lord’s supreme Wisdom.
Be quiet, very quiet, and think, as much as you can, only of the goal and the Supreme Lord. He is the giver of peace.
Just a note to tell you that the Lord is aware of your wishes and that the best will be done.
It is the universal struggle between the lower and the higher nature — the ego and the soul. The only way is to be patient. The Lord is always present to help and save.
I received from the Mother the following Message which she distributed for all:
On this occasion of our physical education and sportive activities:
I must tell you once more that for us spiritual life does not mean contempt for Matter but its divinisation. We do not want to reject the body but to transform it. For this physical education is one of the means most directly effective.
So I invite you to participate in the programme beginning today with enthusiasm and discipline— discipline, because it is the indispensable condition of order; enthusiasm, because it is the essential condition of success.
The Lord knows you, your heart, your soul, and the difficulties. He is with you, on the side of your soul, so the victory is certain, you can be quite sure of it.
Always with you in love and peace
There is only one way of getting out of the confusion (which is the result of mixed and conflicting desires); and that way is quietness, peace, confidence in the Divine’s Grace and silence in the mind, to let it receive the right inspiration which is waiting above for the silence and the quietness to enable it to manifest.
Be confident, you will become what you have to be and achieve what you have to do.
The Lord’s love is there to make everybody happy — but very few are those who care for it!
A lasting relation between souls is the cause of their meeting in life, but not necessarily that they are tied together and have the same destiny.
My love is always with you
I have no time to answer all your questions.
But here is enough to start you thinking about it.
Beware of translations, they are never adequate.
I wrote to the Mother:
In the course of something that the Mother has said, there occur the following words, “There is no spiritual life...” If there is no spiritual life then what are we here for?
She answered:
This is only part of the sentence and cannot stand alone.
I mean that the division between so-called spiritual life and so-called ordinary life is false.
There is life upon earth more or less conscious, more or less unconscious, more or less true, more or less false.
What we must aspire for is to become conscious and to become true.
Letters like that ought to leave you quite indifferent with its uncalled for paternity.
You have only one true father, it is the Supreme Lord and He is taking care of your security.

The decision is taken long ago. You belong to the Lord and the Lord will claim you in spite of all circumstances.
And the more your mental and your vital are quiet, the quicker it will be done.

Earth-life is the self-chosen habitation of a great Divinity and his æonic will is to change it from a blind prison into his splendid mansion and high heaven-reaching temple.

According to Sri Aurobindo, 1.2.34 is supposed to be a year of manifestation. 2.3.45 is the year of Power — when the thing manifested gets full force. 4.5.67 is the year of complete realisation.
It is all right, do not worry.
Those who do not tell everything to me do so, because they prefer to decide themselves what they will do, and they write only to get the protection on what they are doing.
Everybody is free.
I wrote,
Mother, you declared: “In 1967 the Supermind will enter the phase of Realising Power”. What does “Realising Power” mean exactly?
Acting decisively on the mind of men and the course of events.
What is the effect of the Realising Power on the Mother’s own physical being and then the effect upon others and the world in general — including the outstanding problems of the world today?
We can wait with a little patience and we shall see.
Does this date — 4. 5. 67 — mark the beginning of what the Mother and Sri Aurobindo have called the New Race — the Race of Supermen?
Since a few months the children born, amongst our people mostly, are of a very special kind.
How is the spiritual life to be distinguished from the ordinary?
Be sincere
How should one live the life one chooses?
What is your and Sri Aurobindo’s position towards life?
Love the Divine, surrender to the Divine, live for the Divine and be sincere.
My very dear little Child
The happiness and the peace that I want for you are not conditioned by outward things, they depend on no circumstances and no conditions.
They are the result of a perfect and absolute surrender to the Divine, a complete abdication of all personal preferences and wills.
Then the constant and integral union with the Divine is possible, and that union brings automatically peace and happiness.
But even before that is realisable we can easily understand that the Lord knows better than us what is good for us and what will lead us quickly to the goal — so the best way is to let Him do what he sees best and not to worry about it.
If at each moment we do the best we can and do not worry about tomorrow, we feel already a great relief.
The way is long and difficult for everybody, and to change the physical nature is a big job — but it has to be done.
The only way to make it quicker is to keep an unshaken faith in the Divine and a great intensity in aspiration — the rest is done for you.
The more there are difficulties, the more you can be sure that the Lord is pulling you towards Himself as quick as you can possibly go.
The fatigue comes from inner tension and restlessness not from physical work. If we keep quiet in our mind and vital we are never tired.
I wrote:
Mother, I have heard that in 1967 India will become “The Spiritual Guru of the world....”
But how? When we consider the present condition....
India ought to be the spiritual leader of the world. Inside she has the capacity, but outside.... for the moment there is still much to do for her to become actually the spiritual leader of the world.
There is such a wonderful opportunity just now! But....
I conveyed to the Mother a report expressing disappointment with the working of the Government machinery. She responded:
... what he says of the government’s machinery is quite true — but happily there are there a few beings who are still human and through whom something can be done.
By keeping a steady and luminous faith we participate in the victory of the Truth.
There is nothing to do, but to watch and see what happens — and then, at each moment to remain open to the Lord’s influence alone and to do exactly what He instructs to do — all that in a perfect confidence and quietness.
Here is the first lesson
Integral sincerity.
That is to say, the whole being in all its parts and all its activities wants only the Divine, aspires only for the Divine.
So long as outward circumstances will have the power to upset you, you will not be able to keep the Lord’s peace and joy. To have them permanently, you must live in your inner consciousness, deep inside, and care only for your aspiration and the Lord’s Presence.
You said you wanted to do yoga — Yoga is sufficient to fill a whole life if it is done seriously. But it goes without saying, one must be patient, otherwise nothing can be achieved.
I have assured you that the Presence and the help are with you. But to take advantage of them, you must be steady.
There is only one way out of all difficulties. But it is a sure one.
Keep your faith intact and living, like a shining flame.
“The ascent to Truth”
The “ascent” is a steep one but with the Divine’s help everything is possible...
We must be more enduring than the opposition and all obstacles will disappear.
I can only repeat one thing which I told you already many times —
There is only one remedy, it is not to listen to people when they begin to gossip and pay no attention to what they say. Never to be affected by all this talk. Not to mind a bit what people say or do not say. Never answer to what they say. Never utter a word when you feel angry.
And to be able to do that there is one way — think of the Divine, take refuge in the Divine, surrender all, your life, your feelings, your friends and your enemies, all and everything, to the Divine.
It is to teach you to do that, that all these bothers come to you.
The quicker you learn the lesson, the sooner it will stop and you will be out of it.
It takes always time to live according to the spiritual principles, but with patience the result is sure.
I looked at the book. Yes, it is occultism. But each teacher of occultism has his own theory and declares that it is the most ancient teaching and tradition.
In each teaching there is something true based on personal experience and also something very relative which is the product of the mental theories and additions.
So all these books can be read with interest, but not taken as a gospel of Truth.
When you are ready for occultism you will know it yourself and your experiences will take a special significance and a special value.
Everything is going on according to the Supreme’s Will — and you will come out of it when you will have lost your last illusions about life as it is and humanity without the Divine!
Your letter of yesterday and all its questions have been answered already, fully and completely, all explanations given, and all concerning the yoga. But these answers and explanations have been sent in silence, not written, just because they are concerning yoga, and you must receive them by the inner reception, otherwise their effect is incomplete and may even be falsified by the misunderstandings of the mind.
So do not try to grasp them with your mind, let them do their work inwardly, which they are doing, even if you do not know it.
I can add that the needed effect is being achieved and that you are advancing towards your goal in a steady way, even more rapidly than expected.
So all is well and do not worry. Trust the Divine’s Wisdom which arranges things for the best and answers all the aspirations even if they are not formulated. Be confident, my dear child, all is well.

You can write freely whenever you feel the need of it. I always answer in silence, and when I have time, I write.
Certainly I do not want you to suffer. But for that you must get detached from all circumstances and attached only to the Divine, because all circumstances are horribly mixed up good and bad together, and the Divine alone is unmixed and never fails.
It is the Lord who creates the friendships.
It is the Lord who ends the friendships; it is the Lord who makes us lonely to make us ready for His everlasting friendship; when we are ready for it, all loneliness disappears and we become constantly aware of His soothing Presence which dismisses all loneliness.
But in any case the Divine Power is working always behind and one day, perhaps when one least expects it, the obstacle breaks, the clouds vanish and there is again the light and the sunshine. The best thing in these cases is, if one can manage it, not to fret, not to despond, but to insist quietly and keep oneself open, spread to the Light and waiting in faith for it to come : that, I have found, shortens these ordeals.
Why do you not leave the whole burden of your life and its destiny to the Lord?
You would be relieved of all responsibility and you would be assured of reaching your goal as He said that you would reach it!
A person had a sceptical mind. He always argued, criticised, doubted, mocking the Divine’s Truth. I informed the Mother about the matter. She wrote:
It would be for you a very great progress if you could hear his sarcasms with a smile, a quiet mind and peaceful heart.
For you it is a tremendous step towards your goal.
For him it would be a convincing proof of the power of Truth.
And to make this achievement easy, I am always with you.
It is good to make a clear cut with the past — so that only the Eternal Love remains.
The Divine’s Love will look to everything.
It is a Victory day — let it be the symbol of the Divine's Victory in you over all that made obstruction in the past — Victory of the Divine Future over the obscurity of the past.
Do not be confused. All this is to teach you to be like a butterfly without care of the future, leaving all to the care of this Supreme in full trust and confidence.
Everything will come in due time — the true Power knows how to wait.
I have only one thing to say — The Lord is taking the utmost care of you and arranging circumstances so that you are put in the condition — outer and inner — the most favourable to your reaching your goal as quickly as possible. When you have understood that, most of your trouble will go.
On my spiritual birthday — decided by the Mother — She personally gave me fifteen cards with her powerful and luminous words, which apply to every one. For, the Universal Nature is ONE.
Bonne Fête
Let it be the true new birth — the birth at the Divine Consciousness from which one never comes out again.
When you sincerely want the Divine, all circumstances come to teach you that no human love can satisfy, as the Divine’s love alone is perfect and true.
Instead of complaining of the circumstances of your life, rather try to understand the lesson they bring to you. For each event is a lesson meant to lead you quick to your goal — the Divine.
If you want to profit fully from a teaching heard or written, never discuss or argue; keep silent and attentive; thus allowing the teaching to enter your consciousness and do its work in your attentive mind.
After some time you will discover that you have properly understood the meaning of the teaching received.
Never say to the Lord “I need this or that to be able to reach my goal”, because He knows better than you what is good for your progress and it is just that which He gives you.
When you are shocked by the pride of another, know that it is because you, yourself, are full of pride.
But know also that pride is in you to be turned into its opposite the true humility, the humility towards the Divine which makes us surrender to the Supreme Will.
Be perfectly sincere — it is the best protection.
Do not boast — achieve.
Do not pretend — be.
For the sake of the sadhana, it is only to the Guru that you can speak of yourself.
When you speak to others of yourself, you accumulate difficulties on your way.
There is a greater force in a smile than in tears.
A spontaneous smile dissolves the obstacles, like the rays of the sun dissolve the clouds.
Be patient — it makes the way shorter.
Prayer
“Que ta volonté soit faite, Seigneur et pas la mienne.”
“Permets, Seigneur, que je sois Tienne, entièrement et absolument.”
It is truly nonsense and you ought not to be affected.
What the Lord has decided will be, in spite of all opposition and negation.
Strong with his conviction we do not care for what the ignorant may say.
The Mother wrote to me on 15. 11. 67 about the Matrimandir, Auroville:
Mother’s Shrine will be an empty place, empty of all material things, meant only for meditation, contemplation and prayer ... and I hope, filled with light, spiritual force and the presence of the Truth.
There is always this critical hostile voice in everybody’s nature, questioning, reasoning, denying the experience itself, suggesting doubt of oneself and doubt of the Divine. One has to recognise it as the voice of the Adversary trying to prevent the progress and refuse credence to it altogether.
Never I sit in meditation, there is no time and no necessity for it. Because it is not through meditation that one gives oneself to the Divine, it is through consecration and surrender — and it is through all activities of life that consecration and surrender are to be made.
I received and read all your letters, but do not answer, because words are useless. The Lord is looking to everything and making of every event the surest way to lead you quickly to your goal.
The Mother sent me a touching quotation from her own writing:
O immutable Peace, Deliver men from ignorance; May Thy full and pure Light Reign everywhere!

never stop striving towards perfection.
No words can soothe your condition; it is only when you will open exclusively to the Divine’s love that you will get not only relief but also peace and joy. All depends on receptivity and the unification of the being. The Grace is always with you, all help is constantly given, so all depends on the receptivity and openness of your being. The more you are unified and receptive, the quicker it will go.
Let your thoughts be filled with the Divine’s Truth and your heart be filled with the Divine’s Love
We must let the Lord see and arrange things for us — then we shall be out of trouble.
There are no likings or dislikings — only the clear vision of what helps one to come closer to the Divine and what does not — and this does not go by fixed rules, for each person and at each moment this can change.
So to make rules is useless and rather an obstruction. The aspiration must be always there, and the will to do the right thing — that is all.
With love and blessings always.
There are some who are born to unite with the Divine and nothing can satisfy them except the Divine. So whatever happens to them they are unsatisfied and they will be contented and happy only when their consciousness is united with the Divine’s consciousness.
The only way for them is to concentrate on their Divine goal and to think of nothing else. Like that they can be satisfied and life becomes interesting.
Keep always present in your heart the remembrance of the Divine — and everything will become all right.
Nature proves her collaboration with a smile of flowers.
On the Mother’s birthday, 21.2. 68, I went to her in the afternoon. She gave me a silver-coloured blessing-packet along with this Message:
The best way to hasten the manifestation of the Divine’s Love is to collaborate for the triumph of the Truth.
She smiled and said:
Child, the continuation of this message will come on the 29th.
On the 29th the Mother handed me the following Message:
Truth alone can give to the world the power of receiving and manifesting the Divine’s Love.
To realise the Divine and unite with the Divine, you must lose your ego. It is the dissolving ego that feels miserable. If you dissociate from the ego, you will no more feel miserable and soon you will become aware of your soul — and then you will always be aware of the Divine Grace and its quiet happiness.
My love and blessings are always with you.
As for what people say to me, you can be quite at ease — I believe only what the Lord tells me.
There is no harm in taking liquid food so long as it pleases you.
But for the health, the most important is an inner calm and peace that are not affected by the outer circumstances — it is to teach us that lesson that the difficulties come.
Mother, I wish and want to go back to my own world from where I came.
I am leading you to a place much more beautiful than the one from which you came — a place of full and harmonious consciousness.
The Divine Grace understands everything and through everything leads to the Goal.
I came across this card which says exactly what I wanted to say to you.
“It is in life that the true victory is to be won. You must know how to be alone with the Eternal and the Infinite in the midst of all circumstances. You must know how to be free, with the Supreme for companion, in the midst of all occupations. That is the true victory.”
If we look at troubles as the most effective way to make us progress, then they lose their bitterness and they become easy to bear.
And when we know how to call the Lord in all circumstances to make Him share in all the events of our life, then life becomes an Ananda because He covers all with His delight! With love and blessings
The full strength is given to you and you receive and will receive it according to your faith and confidence.
Keep the certitude of the final Victory constantly present in your mind and the way will be much shorter.
The final Victory is already there present in the Lord, waiting for the earth to become aware of it.
With patience and confidence, everything will be done in time and you are sure to reach your goal.
To reach the goal is sure. But the more you are quiet and confidently peaceful, the quicker it comes.
When difficulties come it is to teach us to be peaceful and even cheerful in spite of everything.

Indeed, division in the being is one of the most painful things. But it yields only before a very steady tapasya which has its result of unifying the being.
All restlessness and impatience, on the contrary, delay the transformation. For that one who has given himself to the Divine, things go quicker but still patience is needed.
So be patient and confident.

Peace in the storm, calm in the effort, joy in the surrender, a luminous faith, and you will become aware of the Lord’s constant Presence.

I have told you already that difficulties are the sign of possibilities. So they must not upset us. To remain quiet and confident is the best way to make them pass away quickly.
Do not fear the difficulties: they come to shorten the way, showing us clearly what has to be changed. And the more you endure, the quicker it is finished.
Do not worry — the medical reports are always pessimistic to compel the patient to accept the treatment. Be confident and soon you will be all right.
Be steady and confident — you will reach your goal.
“He who wants the Divine is wanted by the Divine”.

Quite right. Almost all the physical troubles have their cause in an inner disorder.
Get the inside quite all right and everything will be all right.
Be peaceful and quiet, give up the charge of everything to the Lord and you will be quite all right.
The true condition is to be so much absorbed in an all embracing love for the Divine that to do something or not to do it, to see somebody or not to see, does not matter at all; when this condition is realised, then on each occasion one knows the Divine’s Will and can obey it easily.
To aspire steadily is the best way to unify one’s being and you are sure to succeed.
My love and help are and will always be with you.
And my blessings too.
If we want our consecration to the Divine to be total and perfect, it must be unconditioned and independent from all circumstances.
Be filled with the Divine’s Happiness; it is the best way of making me happy.

On the Mother’s birthday she sent me the following Message:
It is only immutable peace that can make possible eternity of existence.
This message from the Mother appealed to me so much:
The best possible way is to allow the Divine Grace to work in you, never to oppose it, never to be ungrateful and turn against it — but to follow it always to the goal of Light and Peace and unity and Ananda.
Whenever I hear about your ill-health I feel as if I were broken.
She replied:
It is not a question of health, it is a question of transformation.
And it is always the Supreme’s Will that is realised. Never forget that, and you will be in peace.
The Mother gave us all this touching Message on Sri Aurobindo’s birthday:
Our attention must be fixed on the earth because our work is here. Besides, the earth is a concentration of all the other worlds and one can touch them by touching something corresponding in the earth-atmosphere.

The transformation of the whole being is not only a possibility, it is a certitude — But it takes time and patience, endurance and confidence in spite of all difficulties, set backs and delays. My force and courage are always with you to face everything.
My love is always with you. Do you not feel it any more?
Let peace reenter your heart and think only of the Divine.
Why get disturbed?
I am neither tired nor in a hurry. With the proper attitude, one can in five minutes do the work of half an hour.
All depends on being quiet and steady, and then the time does not matter. When I am ready for the work, it means that we have time to do it and what the clock says does not matter...
What is most important is to keep a peaceful heart and that is always possible when relying on the Divine Grace.
So be quiet and peaceful — and all will be all right.
I received from the Mother this impressive Message:
Every truth, however true in itself, yet, taken apart from others which at once limit and complete it, becomes a snare to bind the intellect and a misleading dogma; for in reality each is one thread of a complex weft and no thread must be taken apart from the weft.
You can be sure of my help. I am here only to help, and those who aspire sincerely to the Truth are the first to be helped.
The Mother’s answer to my letter dated 26.12.69 about the wonderful dream I had:
Happily, the true worlds and the true Consciousness are not a dream, but the only real Reality for those who are sincere and conscious.

The world is preparing for a big change. Will you help?

From the first of January 1970 I was feeling terribly uneasy. I informed the Mother.
The action of the Consciousness has intensified since the first. It is the resistance in the body that is cause of the uneasiness. But do not worry, I am always with you.
On the occasion of the Mother’s birthday the following Message was given to all:
Truth is a difficult and strenuous conquest. One must be a real warrior to make this conquest, a warrior who fears nothing, neither enemies nor death, for with or against everybody, with or without a body, the struggle continues and will end by Victory.
THE MOTHER
The Mother has stated:
Humanity is not the last rung in terrestrial creation. Evolution continues and man will be surpassed.
It is for each one to find out whether he wishes to participate in the advent of this new race.
In this connection the Mother has revealed on 11. 4. 70:
You know that Sri Aurobindo is teaching us that man is not the last term of the evolution and that a supramental being is in preparation. Between the man of yesterday and the new being that is to come, there is a number of men who will develop intuitive capacities and will serve as a kind of bridge between the two. It is these I call the men of tomorrow.
This is the moving Message on the Darshan day:
To know the highest Truth and to be in harmony with it is the condition of right being, to express it in all that we are, experience and do is the condition of right living.
The adverse forces have no power when one loves the Divine.
Be confident.
My love and blessings are with you.
You have decided to become conscious of the Divine and to realise the Divine in your life and to that goal I shall lead you. Instead of getting upset or disturbed, you must take all that happens now in your life as the surest way to lead you to your goal. Now concentrate exclusively on your own realisation and think only of the Divine and how to unite to the Divine. My help is concretely and constantly with you.
This Message was given to all of us:
To persevere in turning towards the Light is what is most demanded. The Light is nearer to us than we think and at any time its hour may come.

You are my beloved child and will always be.
Do not mind what others say.
For nobody the path is easy. But say sincerely to the Divine “Let Thy will be done” and be patient. It is the best we can do.

On Christmas day, 25. 12. 71, the Mother gave the following Message to all:
The time has come for the rule of falsehood to end.
In the Truth alone is salvation.

On 15th August 1972 — Sri Aurobindo’s 100th birthday — the Mother distributed the following Messages to all:
One step more towards
Eternity
The best homage that we can render to Sri Aurobindo on his centenary is to have a thirst for progress and to open all our being to the Divine Influence of which he is the messenger upon the earth.
For everybody the path is long and has its dull moments. You must be patient and steady. I said that you are going on all right.
Beyond all preferences and limitations, there is a ground of mutual understanding where all can meet and find their harmony: it is the aspiration for a divine consciousness.
In answer to my letter the Mother wrote:
Before dying falsehood rises in full swing.
Still people understand only the lesson of catastrophe. Will it have to come before they open their eyes to the truth?
I ask an effort from all so that it has not to be.
It is only the Truth that can save us; truth in words, truth in action, truth in will, truth in feelings. It is a choice between serving the Truth or being destroyed.
The following is the Mother’s last answer to a letter from me:
My dearest Mother,
I am deeply grateful to You for calling me on Fridays. I pray to You with all my heart and soul to make me worthy of You - Your work, Your Love and Your Grace.
Mother, You are my only refuge and I always rely on You. I have no desire or craving for any material things. I am sincerely longing to unite with the Divine consciously and concretely. I implore You to remove all the obstacles in my way and please prepare me for The Supreme Truth and Love, And use my life for Your purpose. I am Yours and I want to be integrally Yours.

These cards were given to me personally by the Mother:
It is only by remaining perfectly peaceful and calm, with an unshakable confidence and faith in the Divine Grace, that you will allow circumstances to be as good as they can be. The very best happens always to those who have put their entire trust in the Divine and in the Divine alone.
“Life has a purpose. This purpose is to find and to serve the Divine.
The Divine is not far, He is in ourselves, deep inside and above the feelings and the thoughts.
With the Divine is peace and the certitude and even the solution of all difficulties.
Hand over your problems to the Divine and He will pull you out of all difficulties.
My love and blessings are with you.”
“The Divine is present among us. When we remember Him always He gives us the strength to face all circumstances with perfect peace and equanimity.
Become aware of the Presence and your difficulties will disappear.”
Mother, let the Lord’s work be accomplished. I pray for the whole world. Victory, Victory, Victory of the TRUTH only, OM.
It will be.
If our souls could see and love and clasp God’s Truth, Its infinite radiance would seize our hearts, Our being in God’s image be remade And earthly life become the life divine.
