Sri Aurobindo's principal work on yoga. In this book Sri Aurobindo examines the traditional systems of yoga and provides an explanation of certain components of his own system of integral yoga. There is an Introduction, 'The Conditions of the Synthesis' and four parts: 'The Yoga of Divine Works', 'The Yoga of Integral Knowledge', 'The Yoga of Divine Love' and 'The Yoga of Self-Perfection'. The material was first published serially in the monthly review 'Arya' between 1914 and 1921; the introduction and first two parts were later revised by Sri Aurobindo for publication.

Bibliographical Note

THE SYNTHESIS OF YOGA first appeared serially in the Arya from August, 1914 to January, 1921 in four parts, preceded by an extensive Introduction in five chapters.

Subsequently the first twelve chapters of Part One, "The Yoga of Divine Works", were thoroughly revised and enlarged. With the Introduction excluded they were brought out in book from in 1948 by the Sri Aurobindo Library, Madras. In 1950 the Sri Aurobindo Library, New York, published them with a Glossary and an Index. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, issued these chapters in 1953.

In 1955 a complete edition of THE SYNTHESIS OF YOGA was published under the imprint of the Sri Aurobindo International University Centre. To the revised version of "The Yoga of Works" was added Chapter XIII, a new piece of writing left incomplete by the author. Part Two, "The Yoga of Integral Knowledge", had been less extensively revised. Part Three, "The Yoga of Divine Love", and Part Four, "The Yoga of Self-Perfection", were reprinted from the Arya, incorporating the minor corrections found in the author’s copy.

This 1955 edition was reprinted in 1957 and 1965. The present SRI AUROBINDO BIRTH CENTENARY LIBRARY edition is the fourth complete edition.

It may be noted here that Sri Aurobindo intended to revise and enlarge "The Yoga of Divine Love" and "The Yoga of Self-Perfection", but did not find the time for this work.
