Mohana

(A MIDNIGHT RAGA)

HEAR the moon ring Sorrow's knell

(Listen to her silver bell),

Through the mind and through the heart

Sound like sword-blade shadows part.

Dark's misdeeming put to flight,

What espy by songcraft light ?

Prester's realm, or the uncharted lea—

Pentexoire and Femenye ?

Swift as arrow cleaves to goal

Music flings from pole to pole—

Earth from aeon-depth of trance

Silvered forth to utterance.

December 26, 1935.
