Night

SHADOW-SILENT is the sky :

Teeming earth, a muted cry

Sends but whispers down the breeze.

Shadow-pinioned glide the hours ;

Slumber-freighted lie the flowers';

Silent listeners are the trees.

Star-engirt the heaven's pole ;

Horned moon seeks westward goal;

Day's quaffed wine cup holds but lees.

Surging thoughts have ebbed away ;

Passions wane ; and spirit sway,

Girt with Silence, out-tops these.
