Overcast Night In June

WHERE had all the starlight flown ?

Or who had held the moon.

From waxing on, when Spring had gone,

To silver the flowers of June ?

Over the beech-crowned chalky hill

Zenithed a baldachin

Of silken hush and ebon crush

Where columns of cloud begin.

Every sky-mark of the night

Was blotted utterly ;

And darkness flowed where stars had glowed—

Thought's land o'errun by sea.
