... longer existed, there were no more limits, I was no longer here—what was here was THE PERSON. An hour and a half was needed to return to the body-consciousness (not the physical consciousness but the body-consciousness), to the individual body-consciousness. The first sign of the return to individuality was a prick of pain, a tiny point (Mother holds between her fingers a minuscule point in... once: those abrupt experiences that do not settle in but are first contacts ²). After the lesson was drawn from this story, suddenly something arose in the body consciousness—which isn't ONE body's consciousness but a general body consciousness—an aspiration, something so pure, so sweet... so sweet... something like an entreaty that Truth and Light may at last be manifested here, in this. Not 'here... neared the head, I thought I would burst and that the experience would have to be stopped. But then, I very clearly received the indication to make the Calm and Peace descend, to widen all this body-consciousness and all these cells, so that they could contain the supramental light. So I widened, and as the light was ascending, I brought down the vastness and an unshakable peace. And suddenly, there was ...

... in the mind; if the mind accepts it, it becomes clouded and confused and has to struggle back into harmony and clearness. It is so with the body consciousness and illness. You must not accept but reject it with your physical mind and so help the body consciousness to throw off the suggestion. If necessary, make a counter-suggestion, "No, I shall be well; I am and shall be all right." And in any case... (adverse suggestions) in the mind, vital, body consciousness. Where all this is completely done or with some completeness, the effects can be very remarkable. In much the same way as Coué's suggestion system cured most of his patients, [ so an ordinary doctor would cure his patients, ] only by a physical instead of a mental means. The body consciousness responds to the suggestion or the medicine... mental and inferior planes and Supramental Nature. What is acquired and held by the Yoga Force in the mind and body consciousness is in the supramental inherent and exists not by achievement but by nature—it is self-existent and absolute. What I meant was that the body consciousness through old habit of consciousness admits the force of illness and goes through the experiences which are associated ...

... back you had said that it was the subconscient that was mostly dealt with. Well?       A great part of the body consciousness is subconscient and the body-consciousness and the subconscient are closely bound together. The body and the physical do not coincide — the body-consciousness is only part of the whole physical consciousness. 1         If the inner being keeps separate then it... was with great difficulty that I could maintain the aspiration. Then suddenly the body consciousness emerged from the darkness and took the lead. Would you believe me, it even instigated and directed my mind and vital! It made them stir up from their stupor — their long sleep of inertia. I wonder how the body consciousness can act like this.       It is very possible when one reaches a certain... more to be accepted than the inertia itself.         I heard a voice: "In spite of your efforts you find no fruit. The inertia will either disappear or change only when your whole body consciousness not only rejects it but also remains unaffected."       That is the truth.         The voice also said: "The more you make efforts the sooner the physical will be capable of ...

... you read attentively the next issue of the Bulletin … you will see that it has begun.” 12 In the issue referred to, the Mother published Some Experiences of the Body Consciousness and New Experiences of the Body Consciousness. Without the titles these experiences would read just like other “psychological” yogic experiences. The difference, nevertheless, is enormous. This was no longer a Yoga... an idea of the enormous gap to be bridged and of the necessity of a step in between the human and the supramental being – which is what the Mother was working at. In the Experiences of the Body Consciousness 13 we read: “When we speak of transformation, the word still has for us a vague meaning. It gives us the impression that something is going to happen and all will be well as a consequence... body is infirm and incapable, the infirmities and incapacities will be removed; and so on. But as I have said, it is all very vague, it is only an impression. Now a remarkable thing about the body consciousness is that it is unable to know a thing with precision and in full detail except when it is on the point of accomplishing it. So, when the process of transformation becomes clear, when one is able ...

... s of the Body Consciousness and New Experiences of the Body Consciousness. As most of these notes appeared familiar in her and Sri Aurobindo’s writings, they were not accorded the importance they deserved, in spite of the Mother drawing special attention to them. Finally, there is the physical consciousness itself, the material consciousness, the body consciousness, and this is the [consciousness] which so far has never been entirely transformed. ... human constitution, man's surface consciousness, derived from the three universal principles just mentioned, is composed of mind, life (generally referred to by Sri Aurobindo as the vital) and body-consciousness. He distinguishes mind from the other two elements of the surface nature, namely, the vital and the body-consciousness, which are mixed up with mind on the surface. The vital is the Life-Nature made up of sensations, energies of action, instincts, impulses, desires, feelings and emotions. The body, says Sri Aurobindo... at the same time, the vehicle of expression of an overt Consciousness that has emerged and is self-aware in our physical energy-substance." 16 Regarding the confounding of the vital and the body-consciousness with mind, Sri Aurobindo explains: "Mind identifies itself to a certain extent with the movements proper to physical life and body and annexes them to its mentality, so that all consciousness ...
